I took a bag of dried figs to Fatima, who put them in a pale-blue bowl and told me to take them through to my mother, promising to bring along some fresh tea. She told me off for my heavy sigh, and said I should be more dutiful about keeping my mother company, especially as I did it so rarely. I pulled a face, and she made to chase me with her tea towel, which made us both laugh so hard that we had to sit down and catch our breath.
