The Lovers of Algeria

by Anouar Benmalek

The lives of Anna, the Swiss refugee, Nassreddine, the Algerian and Jallal, the street boy interweave in a country which has been torn apart between violent factions for the last fifty years. Romantic, wry, always gruelling, often horrific, and a sobering reminder never to take peace and freedom for granted.

The woman wanders the streets of this large East Algerian market town, anonymous. She is dirty, barefoot, clothed in rags. A black scarf covers her hair. She finds a fountain and washes her feet and hands, but not her face. It is her best protection: who would suspect a European tourist beneath this beggar's guise?
