Death in Danzig

by Stefan Chwin

What a haunting and unsettling book. It will make you look at the most ordinary things in a new way. Beautifully written with an elegiac quality which made me feel very sad.

The freshly opened graves lay drying in the sun like upturned cabinets, full of dust, cobwebs, and pinkish ground-beetles. Startled moths darted high overhead among the beams of light that cut through the pines .... Slabs of grey and black marble lined the path like dominoes, the worn names fading in the dust .... Slowly, unobtrusively, the cemetery was dying, in the quiet rustle of sprinkled earth, like a sun going out unnoticed in the ash-grey fog of an evening rain.
