The Meaning of Night

by Michael Cox

A must read for all those enjoying the recent revival of the big Victorian gothic novel such as Elizabeth Kostova's Dracula update - The Historian. The opening line, 'After killing the red-haired man, I took myself off to Quinn's for an oyster supper', signals the arrival of a completely amoral, illogical hero. You'll hate yourself for hoping he doesn't get caught as his plotting against his 'enemies' becomes more and more sinister.

Yet I bless Laura Tansor for submitting to her conscience; and I bless Miss Eames for sending Mr Carteret the clue that has delivered me from the yoke of perpetual dissimulation. The keys of the kingdom are now in my possession, and I am free to face the world at last as Edward Duport, to marry my dearest girl, and to lay my enemy low at last.
