The Effect of Living Backwards

by Heidi Julavits

You can really feel the tension and suspense as an internal flight is hijacked by three men and a dog in Morocco. However, as the story progresses, the author's use of English seems to hint at not taking the novel too seriously.

It is worthwhile to note the following detail, which I do recall with utter clarity: save for a few gasps, the sort that a low moon or an unexpected view of the sea might elicit, nobody in the coach screamed, not a single passenger, when Tom, the steward, emerged from the first-class cabin with a gun.
