Carthage

by Peter Huby

A dark and chilling tale of life before Christ - though there are parallels in the modern East with the genocide and wars. It brings home the futility of war and its outcomes. The langauage is jerky at times which makes it a difficult read at times.

One of the northern perimeter gates was forced by a Roman patrol in the early hours of the morning or opened by an act of treachery. No-one knew when the crisis was over and Hasdrubal had returned to the city with his troops he had some wretch hanged for the look of things, an old deaf janitor at one of the big houses near the wall. The old man went to his death shaking his head, ignorant of his crime. He was stone deaf and they could not make him understand.
