Vermin

by Adrienne Silcock

A compelling and really enjoyable read about Glory, one of society's misfits, an isolated bag-lady, and how her life changed after she was befriended by seven-year-old Darren. The story is largely told in Glory's own words, in a vernacular which uses strong language, but which has its own poetry.

Me head's sizzlin' with all the happenins. An most of all I'm feelin' guilty that I didn't watch Darren go through his front door. Guilt that I was too fuckin' chicken to hand him back to his mum in person like, explained what happened. I could of taken the risk that she would of believed me even if she hadn't fuckin' thanked me for it. Then again, what would she of done to little Darren?
