Any Human Face

by Charles Lambert

The first few chapters seem a bit confusing until you get the characters and the dates clear - but don't let that put you off. As you discover the links between the people and the events you become totally immersed in their world and in the city of Rome itself. A gripping thriller about real people living lonely, sometimes tedious and often funny lives.

The thing about Andrew is that in his heart he's neither Italian nor British. His colouring, red-haired, freckled, is foreign, an Anglo-Celtic mix that marks him out. But his intimate language, the tongue in which he thinks about his life and dreams, is the Roman of the streets and markets, the Roman his mother once slapped him, in front of Scottish cousins, for using. She'd accused him of showing off, but what he was trying to do was to win them over, to charm them in his shy, small way.
