The Very Thought of You

by Rosie Alison

This traditional saga kept my attention, not through the conventional characters and unsurprising plot developments, but by its location - a charming stately home in Yorkshire. The events (evacuees, the Blitz, the frontline) are reminiscent of many domestic war stories and despite it verging on the melodramatic, it was the lovely descriptions of the grand hall and picturesque surroundings with their acute link to history which kept me reading.

Anna was feeling the strange pull of Ashton’s past .... It was as if she was eavesdropping on another time and place .... But this did not stop her from secretly carving her initials on odd corners of skirting boards, under the washstand, inside her desk. She wanted to be a part of this place. To join its history.
