by Rose Tremain

When a disillusioned antique dealer from London tries to buy a home in the Cevennes area of France he sets in motion a train of events which reveals the dark side of this rural paradise. A tense and atmospheric tale with lots of twists and turns, excellent characterisation and some uncomfortable revelations about family relationships. A great read in every respect.

So she's going to dive now. She's positioning her bare feet on the edge of the white boulder. She's a moment from a neatly executed dive, a moment from the drenching, reviving cold of the pool, when ... at the very corner of her vision, she sees something which shouldn't be there. At first look, she doesn't recognise what it is. She has to look again. She has to stare.
Then she starts screaming.
