It had been pure luck that they made it out of that hold. First up a ladder surrounded by hundreds of men, in a panic for the open air. Guus and he, one right behind the other amidst a ring of elbows. In grim silence they had wormed their way through the ominous howling, below them, above them. Guus in the lead, his white hair like a beacon in the darkness. 'Straight to the rail, don't wait, don't look down too long, just jump!' he had yelled to Guus.
