The Observations by Jane Harris

The Observations

By Jane Harris

Jane Harris’ first novel tells the story of Bessy, who takes a job as a housemaid to a very strange mistress, Arabella. Bessy becomes increasingly more uncertain of her mistress, her strange requests and the journal that she keeps about her servants, and when she finds out about the death of the former housemaid, Nora, in suspicious circumstances, she worries more. Set near Edinburgh in 1863, the author captures perfectly the mood of the time and whilst reading you are transported to another world. Amusing and totally enjoyable, this is to be thoroughly recommended.
