The Eyre Affair

by Jasper Fforde

Set in an alternative recent past, where the Crimean War is still going on, people have genetically re-engineered dodos for pets and Wales has become a Republic, the book begins the adventures of Thursday Next as she investigates deadly crimes against literature. This book is wonderful: the comedy ranges from laugh-out-loud silly to knowingly witty. I've never read "Jane Eyre" but that didn't stop me understanding the jokes about it; in fact, it's made me want to try some of the classics again. All the characters are well-written, with some preposterous names; the situations never seem contrived and the good news is that there are at least four more books in the series!

This book was recommended to me by two of my colleagues (librarians) and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I have since read all of the books in the series and am hoping he will bring out another one soon. I have found all of them to be silly but absolute laugh-out-loud fun. I just can't put them down.
