The Highest Tide

by Jim Lynch

A Richard and Judy read and bound to be popular with borrowers, I dived in like a good librarian. I grew up by the sea and always enjoy reading about it excepting The Sea by John Banville!, and this book did not disappoint. This young teenager, so knowledgeable about marine life and his immediate environment, took me on a real journey to his shore. A coming of age tale with a good storyline, but most fascinating was the description of the almost fantastical creatures which inhabit our tidal flats and the seas, some only ever seen by those people who venture out at low tide or who happen to spot creatures from the depths washing up on shore. I found this book strangely relaxing, and colourful, with an air of intrigue and respect for what lies beneath. Quite a gem of a book.
