Notes from a small island

by Bill Bryson

This book is ideal if you are staying in the UK for a holiday this year. Bill Bryson visits lots of familiar places and views them with the eyes of an American who is proud to live in Britain. You feel that Bill is laughing with us, not about us and is very fond of his subject matter. Bill hilights the characteristics of people and places and points out the things that we would not realise make us any different from any other nationality - our pleasures at the simple things in life 'a nice cup of tea', and the absaudity of the multi-story car park!
I laughed out loud at this book - I wish that there could be a sequel.

Best line in the book "I went into a family butcher's and asked, "How much to do mine?" Could not help laughing out loud on the train.

I just love Bryson's books and have read nearly all of them. He is one author who has me laughing out loud and crying with laughter at one point. I find his books just so easy to read.

One of the funniest books I have ever read.

Brilliant book. It was recommended to me by my sister who has lived in Germany for 10yrs and said it was so true of Britain.

An accurate description of those resident in the UK. A hilarious perception of our quirky country.
