The Poisonwood Bible

by Barbara Kingsolver

This book had so many good reviews that I couldn't wait to read it. Boy, was I disappointed. It was a struggle for me to get through never mind the people in the story.

I avoided this book for a long time, precisely because it had been hyped so much. But when I finally got round to reading it, I loved it. I thought the characters and different points of view of the four daughters were beautifully done and I was fascinated by the insight in the history and politics of postwar Africa, something I knew very little about.

I was keen to read this as I had heard that it featured in a top 20 reading group books chart. I read about two-thirds and whilst I hate not finishing a book, I didn't feel that I was going to be satisfied with it. I think it is just too long. I enjoyed the early part about the family going to live in the Congo, and their time there, but the menace of how it would all fall apart failed to deliver. Okay I didn't finish it, so maybe the end ties this up.
