The First Casualty

by Ben elton

As a reader of war fiction and with a particluar interest in World War I I thought I'd give this a go. Although not Birdsong, this is a great who dunnit set against the backdrop of the trenches. It seemed thoroughly researched with a nod to Blackadder Goes Forth. I could not put it down, reading it over a few days and once I had finished it in the early hours I felt sad and disappointed that it had come to an end. Love, romance and sex feature highly as characters try to connect whilst surviving within the quagmire.

I thoughly enjoyed this too. Some of his descriptions of life in the trenches were quite graphic and very moving. I've read a couple of his books each one is different but always thought provoking.
