The No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency

by Alexander McCall Smith

The style at first seems simple, precise and straightforward. I thought that the story was going to be very slight. But I found that as the words on the page peeled away, so the surface of the account did too, revealing much of what really made the people of Botswana tick. In the same way, beneath the outward appearance of Precious Rambotze and her detective agency much is revealed about her past and present relationships. This book contains humour, but also much sadness in its hidden depths. I enjoyed it; but it did not inspire me to rush out and buy the next one in the series.
