Drood

by Dan Simmons

A horrible Victorian gothic melodrama, at the end of the 800 pages I felt quite soiled!. However, it did make me want to know more about Charles Dickens and Wilkie Collins. That said, it was clever book as it was difficult to know what was real and what was not as it was narrated by the increasingly drug-adled author Wilkie Collins. I'd say that this was not a book for the faint-hearted!

I agree with you but also think the book has a lot to recommend it if you like convulted plots that take real life and mix it with 'filghs of fancy'. It evokes the era well with the heavy Gothic style making it a hard and intense as well as a very long read. It deserves more readers and a better tag. Try it.
