Oranges are not the only fruit

by Jeanette Winterson

I first had to read this as a set text, not always a good thing. Went back to it many years later and still cannot see what all the fuss was about. Smug, selfsatisfied and dreary

Very satisfying to hear someone say it. Most first novels are either thinly disguised autobiography (the protagonist is even called Jeanette) or pretentious waffle - this is both!
