Gaudy Night

by Dorothy L Sayers

One of the Lord Peter Wimsey novels covering his relationship with Harriet Vane, set against the backdrop of Oxford University.A very well written, intelligent crime novel, not just plot driven. A definite period piece evoking another time, but in terms of relationships is still very relevant.Maybe not to many people's taste as the pace quite slow but I am a fan.

Stronger on character than mystery, this period piece is one of the most popular, and later, Lord Peter Wimsey novels. It bears repeat reading, but start at the beginning with 'Whose Body' and follow through all the LPW books - they are clever, witty and evocative; they also still say a lot about human relationships, the female role in life, literature and love of all things rewarding. If you love Wimsey, see the website of the Dorothy L Sayers Society - www.sayers.org.uk - and even join this greatly enjoyable and worldwide group.
