Shadow of the Wind

by Carlos Ruiz Zafon

This book took my breath away! It has got to be up there in the top 3 of my all time favourite reads.
The story is suberbly written, the language flows and the characters are totally engaging. Congratulations to the translator Lucia Graves.
The idea of a place called The Cemetery of Lost Books where books can be found and treasured again is just magical. The parallel of the lives of the author of the 'lost book' and its finder is compelling and intriguing. It is a gripping read in which you are racing along to find answers to the mysteries and yet you never want the story to end. I cannot recommend this book highly enough, a definite 'must read'.

I have visited Barcelona last year & wandered the streets which appear in the book. Wonderful! & fascinating! (It may be a bit 'sad' but it was a joy even though on the day there was a downpour & we got absolutely soaked!) We stayed in a hotel just off Las Ramblas, behind the Theatre, with the street where the Cemetery of Lost Books located not far away. Magical!

A compelling read - I cannot think of any other book that I have read to top the No 1 spot of my Best Reads. I totally agree with all that Sue of Leeds wrote about this book.
