The Post Office Girl

by Stefan Zweig

The story is set in Austria in the years following WWI. Christine works in a post office and supports her sick mother after her brother is killed during the war and father passes away. An invitation from her wealthy American aunt gives her a glimpse of a better, richer, more fulfilling existence, but it is all snatched away too quickly and Christine can't face returning to poverty and dullness of her life.
