King Jesus

by Robert Graves

This book is an intriguing semi-historical re-telling of the story of the life of Jesus Christ, told with Graves' characteristic insight into history, religion and mythology. Jesus is presented by Graves as a man, not the son of God and as a philosopher and preacher as well as a royal heir to the Judean Throne (hence the title!). Many of the familiar stories of Jesus are retold and explained in terms of the culture and religious understanding of the time, which makes for fascinating insights into the world of early Christianity. Highly recommended to anyone with an interest in history and the influence of Christianity.
