The Cider House Rules

by John Irving

John Irving has always been recommended to me as a fantastically detailed author. This proved to be true in a stomach turning way, within the first few chapters the author describes in detail the 'feel' of an abortion - a gritty scraping of the womb. I am quite willing to admit I am a complete wuss but I tried to read on and could not engage with any of the characters as I'd been so completely turned off.
