A Thousand Spendid Suns

by Khaled Hosseini

I really enjoyed this book ! It's not the sort I would normally choose but I found it enthralling ! It basically tells the story of a girl growing up in Afganistan before the Taliban. She is forced into marriage with a much older man and having been brought up in an all-female household which was quite liberal, she finds the new 'regime' very difficult to live with. However, she is soon worn down and becomes compliant and I feel, 'spiritless'. It really is very sad but I found it a fascinating insight into the way the culture and it's people survived on a day-to-day basis. It's definately worth a go !!!

I loved this book, I found I couldn't put it down. It really was a very sad story but was also full of hope. A bittersweet tale.

I too really enjoyed this book. It made me think of how other people have to live and how I take the freedom enjoyed in this country for granted. It is well worth reading.
