1990 Formulation of key principles
Hertfordshire Libraries held a fiction day each year where a large number of staff read specific titles and then came together to discuss them in groups. The first freelance engagement for Opening the Book was to speak to library staff at this day in November 1990. This was the first occasion on which Rachel Van Riel articulated the principles on which reader development came to be based:
- raise the status of reading as a creative act
- increase people’s confidence in their reading
- find ways of bringing isolated readers together
